Connecting a Wiimote to a PC

return to Projects

The Wiimote can be connected to a PC via Bluetooth. It is a test of luck (almost) to find the right adapter and bluetooth stack to use. In some cases a BT adapter and stack that works on one PC with the Wiimote won't allow full Wiimote functionality on another.

The following site provides a list of working BT adapters and stacks:

There are three main stacks that seems to work depending on the adapter:

The following were the Bluetooth adapters I tested and the result:

Manufac Part # Bluesoleil Toshiba Microsoft CD Operating System Notes
D-Link DBT-120 v.B1 Connects. No IR.. Connects. No IR Connects. No data No connection Tested with Vista and XP Unstable connection
D-Link DBT-120 v.C1 BT 2.0 Connects. No IR Connects. Works well. Comnects. No IR Connects. No IR Works under Vista and XP Only Toshiba stack allows full function. Other stacks only allowed control of LED, buttons and rumble.
Belkin F8T012 100m BT.2.0 Connects. No IR.. Connects. No IR Connects. No IR Connects. No IR Tested with Vista and XP Unstable connection
Toshiba integrated Portege R205 Connects. No data Connects. No data . Connects. No data Connects. No data Windows XP Unstable connection

I tested the above BT adapters and stacks on a Windows XP laptop and a Windows Vista PC. The D-link BT120 v.C1 BT2.0 using the version 5.1 toshiba stack on the Toshiba laptop running XP and Vista worked successfully. Most of the stacks would only receive/control the buttons, rumble and LED on/off, or no response.

Your results on your computer may have different results than mine. It was trial and error that finally led me to the right computer/OS/stack/adapter union.
